Puppy training

Puppy training wirral

or

how to get it right during the most critical development stage of your dogs life.

The first day - why start now?

Why? Because whether you realise it or not you already have...

From the moment you bring your new puppy into your home it is learning.

The most important thing it is learning is whether you can be trusted and if you deserve respect.

puppy training wirral

Without educating yourself as to what your puppy needs from you it is very easy to fall into the subtle trap of having your puppy training you rather than the other way round. If you observe the majority of people with their unruly dogs it is during this crucial stage they made mistakes. You have the opportunity right now to make a difference to your future with your dog.

Something you probably understand

#1: Puppies can be too cute for their own good.

Your puppy is taken from its mother at around 8 weeks old.

The likelihood is all structure and discipline go with her.

You're not alone, we've all been there.

This beautiful bundle of fluff and cuteness lands and all we want to do is cuddle and love it!

This is the point where, without guidance  things can start to go wrong...

mother knows best

The mother dog teaches the puppy what is acceptable and what is not acceptable, she also advocates for the puppy.
When your puppy comes to live with you it is your responsibility to take over that authority role.

You are responsible for showing the puppy how to cope and thrive in this completely new alien world.

Top Dog House can help you take over this essential role in your new puppy's life and give you the head start you are looking for!

Secondly...

#2: Authority prevents chaos.

Pampering, fussing, loving the puppy ON ITS OWN will create a spoilt, disrespectful, entitled dog.
Make no mistake, love and affection are all part of owning a puppy.

The critical part is knowing how much to give and when to give it.

You only have one chance to get this development stage right.

If you fail you will likely spend most of your dogs life avoiding or managing situations and making excuses for your dogs behaviour.

This will make life pretty stressful for both of you.
Sadly, the dog is usually the one who pays the price for human mistakes and misunderstandings.
Time and effort invested now into nurturing a respectful, trusting relationship will pay incredible dividends for you both.

...and most importantly

#3: If you are not prepared to work at your relationship with your puppy then please consider getting a cat...

I say that in all seriousness. Having 17 years+ experience I know it is owners who put in the work to create a loving, trusting, respectful relationship with their dogs who reap the most rewards.

If you wish to give your puppy the best life you posiibly can then you must be willing to fulfill your puppy's needs as well as your own.

If you are committed and want to work to create a great relationship, call me now on 07778881157.

John has been superb working with us and our rather large puppy/dog. Calm and assertive, John has an unpatronizing approach using simple to understand analogies and examples. John has really helped us understand communication with our dog, the difference is amazing. Cannot recommend his services highly enough.

I have a 12 week old puppy which was bitting aggressively (not the normal mouthing). She would bite if I tried to stroke her. In her defence she was rejected by her mother at 5 weeks. I rang John in desperation. He said I did the right thing contacting him when she was so young. I did think of puppy classes but thought I would be able to explain her problems one to one rather than in a big class. John explained that she did not know her place in the hierarchy and was getting frustrated leading to her aggression. He explained what was happening from her point of view and gave me invaluable advice. From been aggressive and dominant she is a happy normal pup. I have had John back for advice on lead training. He is amazing and I would thoroughly recommend him.

John came round to help me get started with Wallace, my then nine week old cocker spaniel puppy. My first dog so I knew I needed some guidance. Investing that couple of hours with John at an early stage has been invaluable. It has saved me so much stress, mess and anguish. I cannot recommend him highly enough. Wallace says thanks, John.

If I could give 5 plus stars I would! We have an 18 month old cocker spaniel Luna. She was becoming a bit of a handful (and embarrassment) jumping up constantly at us, visitors, young family members. Taking her out for a walk was an ordeal before we even got through the front door. She would jump, bite lead, bark, and once through the door nearly took your arm out of your sockets, zig zagged uncontrollably and barked at nothing in particular just made a noise. This went on for a good 5 minutes before she would settle - she would still pull and bite at lead but stopped barking. We used to dread taking her out. So professional help required!! I had researched on internet and lots of trainers were on line only. I then read about John and made contact........ John came to our house met with Luna and chatted with us. He was amazing - explaining how dogs need to live in the pack and how we need to raise our profile and become pack leaders. John is a great explainer (with growls and grunts thrown in) and listener, answering our questions (and some were really daft) and listening to experiences we have had trying to train her offering explanations as to why things we were doing weren't working and what we need to do. After seeing Luna in action - John took over the lead and on approach to front door (Luna messing about) used lead with punch and tension - gave a grunt and Luna stopped in her tracks and sat looking up at him - totally focused. He was the pack leader!! So after showing us how to use the lead correctly and gain her attention we practiced and practiced and practiced and after just 1 visit using the method John showed us we have not experienced the unwanted behavior going out for a walk again. (She is a changed dog but we have changed how we relate to her what we want her do) We are now progressing to a lovely sit and wait while we lock the door and heel command as we start walking. (Still in training but better each day) John has visited 3 times in total. Each time training myself and my husband how to teach Luna new commands (the correct way) we were really confusing her prior to John coming and now realise that we can be and now are her pack leaders. Luna was 17 months old when John started to visit (total 3 times) and is now settled, responsive to key words and commands, recall and the 3 of us are now a good pack. Still lots to do and Johns You Tube vids are great for tips and new things to try. If you need help with the relationship with your dog then you must try John (FOR THE DOGS SAKE!) We now keep things simple and have a smashing little responsive and well behaved (mostly) family pack. Thanks John will keep in touch you are the Dog Father:)

Our labrador started attacking other dogs after he was bitten and John helped us get him back on track so now he is well behaved and loves playing with other dogs again.

John's training inputs are excellent and worked amazing with our dog, Axel. We got John's reference from our next door neighbours and after having a few sessions with him and noticing good changes in Axel, we strongly recommend John to any dog owner who has issues with their pet dog. John visited our house and observed Axel's behaviour and listened to our worries patiently and taught us how to correct the unwanted behaviour of Axel by demonstrating to us live and later on we repeated in front of John. This is the best and the most efficient way to get trained to train dogs. John truly knows his stuff!!! Please do not believe in those who say that they can do the consultation/ behaviour corrections etc. in a zoom call, it is absolute waste of time and money. We are happy that we used John's services and we will continue to use his services in future whenever we need. Thank you John and Axel will be missing his pack leader, John :-):-) Venkat

John recognised the fact that Luna was grieving for the loss of my husband. He knew exactly how to deal with her behaviour about being over protective of me when out walking. I was made to feel that the progress we made was down to me but I could not have done so well without John’s knowledge of my dogs mind set. I now have the knowledge given to me ,by John ,on how I should interact with Luna to make her become a secure and stable dog…and me, a very happy owner. I would 100% recommend John Harrison as a dog behaviourist.

John is so incredible at what he does! Within minutes of him arriving I was wishing I had got him out in my first week of being a dog owner. He breaks down what YOU need to do to get the appropriate behaviours. Within one session, my dog was no longer jumping all over guests & 5 minutes into our outdoor session I’m no longer being dragged around! He totally breaks down the ‘what’ & ‘why’. Alfie is still a work in progress (mainly due to pesky squirrels), but with John’s help I feel much more confident & have a much calmer & obedient dog! Can’t recommend him enough!

We can’t thank John enough for all of the help he’s given us with our Weimaraner, TJ. TJ is nearly 3 and it was very easy to be his owners until he was attacked a couple of times by dogs off leads just after he was 1. TJ’s behaviour completely changed after these experiences. He became aggressive towards other dogs (and their owners!). It was even a struggle having visitors to the house as he lost trust in everyone and everything outside of the family. He became such an anxious dog. Naturally, it caused a serious amount of stress for the whole family. Enter John…. Since John has begun working with TJ, there have been enormous improvements in behaviour, both ours and TJs!!! As a family, we’re very much on the same page now. We worked with two dog trainers before John and there is no comparison. His help is priceless. Others wouldn’t agree to work with TJ after his attacks as he was too aggressive. Before John began working with TJ, we were so overwhelmed with worry for our gorgeous dog and now we feel super confident that we’re well en route to taking him on walks where he’s socialising happily with every dog and human he meets… Thanks John!
